If you ever have the opportunity to see The Body Exhibition, be sure to go see it and learn how amazing the human body truly is. You can study anatomy from a book; but, until you actually see the body's design from the inside, you won't truly admire its interconnected structure. To give you some fascinating data about the body, here are some facts that will amaze you about this fabulous physical masterpiece you live in:
*You have 100,000 miles of blood vessels within your body.
*By age 70, you would have taken 600 million breaths.
*The liver perform 500 functions to keep your body in a state of homeostasis (balance)
*Your brain requires 20% of the blood supply that flows through the 100,000 miles of blood vessels.
*You can fit 10,000 of your cells on the head of a pin. You're comprised of 200 kinds of cells. The average body consists of 75 trillion cells.
*The tiny fibers in your taste buds have chemical receptors that relay messages to your brain so that your stomach releases the appropriate digestive enzyme needed to break down what you just ate.
*Your heart valves pump 4,300 gallons of blood through your heart each day.
Every part of your body is interconnected with all the other parts. Your central nervous system (brain) is assisted by the peripheral nervous system (extends from the brain stem down the spine). These two systems work together so that your body can communicate to the brain what needs to be done for the body to function. For example, if you touch something hot, the nerves at the fingers send a message via the peripheral system to your brain so that you know to withdraw your hand. Your nerve cells create electrical impulses that can exceed speeds of 270 mph.
As you breathe, it is your heart that enables your lungs to deliver freshly oxygenated blood and again it is the heart that returns the de-oxygenated blood back to the lungs to expel. It is no coincidence that the saying "follow your heart" has been around for so long. It is your heart that keeps your cycle of life flowing. If you take the time to understand how magnificent your body truly is, you might think twice about what you put into it or how you treat it.
